Peaceful Soul Check-In

Mental Health Awareness Month has a way of making us pause.
Or at least… it should.
Before I could even invite you to check in—I had to check in with myself.
Lately, I’ve felt a quiet stirring in my soul.
Even after laying mom to rest, my mind wouldn’t rest. Thoughts would come in waves—memories, questions, things I wished I had said. I found myself replaying moments, trying to find peace… but not finding it.
As a therapist, I recognized it --> Rumination.
That cycle of thinking where your mind keeps revisiting the same thoughts, hoping for resolution—but instead creates more distress. But this wasn’t just mental. It was deeper.
My soul was unsettled.
God Cares About Your Whole Being
Scripture reminds us in 1 Thessalonians 5:23 “May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul, and body be kept blameless…”
That verse reminds me that we are not just minds to be managed. We are whole beings.
Spirit.Soul.Body.
And when one part is overwhelmed, it can affect everything.
I wasn’t just grieving. I needed peace in my mind, my heart, and my soul. I was just overwhelmed. My body was not as rest, my soul was not well. My spirit was checking out.
Instead of Pushing Through… I Checked In
Not that quick “I’m fine” answer. Not the automatic response. But a real, honest check-in. Learning my emotions, feeling them, sitting with them.
Why We Avoid Checking In
As a therapist, I see this often.
We avoid checking in because we’re afraid of what we might find:
emotions we’ve been suppressing
stress we’ve been ignoring
people we haven't forgiven
exhaustion we’ve normalized
Sometimes it feels easier to keep going than to slow down and feel.
But what we don’t process we carry; and the weight of unprocessed stuff is too heavy to lift alone.
What It Means to Check In
Checking in doesn’t have to be complicated. It can be as simple as asking yourself:
What am I feeling right now?
What do I need today?
What has been weighing on me lately?
But for me, it also meant checking in on deeper levels:
🌿 With God — pouring out my heart honestly (Psalm 62:8)
🌿 With His people — safe, wise voices who point me back to truth (Hebrews 10:24-25)
🌿 With my mind — noticing the thoughts I was rehearsing (2 Corinthians 10:4-5)
🌿 With my heart — allowing myself to grieve without rushing it (Ecclesiastes 3:4)
This is where healing begins—not in perfection, but in awareness and surrender.
You’re Allowed to Be Well
For many women (and yes, brothas too), caring for everyone else becomes second nature.
But somewhere along the way, we stop tending to ourselves. So let this be your reminder -- You matter too!
Your peace matters. Your mental health matters. Your emotional well-being matters.
Being well is not selfish. It’s stewardship. It's soul care.
When You Need More Than a Check-In
Sometimes a simple check-in reveals something deeper. And that’s where support comes in. Therapy is not just for crisis. It’s for clarity. It’s for healing. It’s for learning how to live with more peace. But the good news is you don’t have to figure everything out on your own.
This Month’s Invitation
This May, instead of trying to do everything, do a S.O.U.L check-in:
S — Sit with God
Slow down and bring your heart before Him
Psalm 62:8 “Pour out your heart before Him…”
Prompt: What do I need to bring to God today?
O — Observe Your Thoughts
Notice what your mind has been rehearsing
2 Corinthians 10:5 “Take every thought captive…”
Prompt: What thoughts have been replaying in my mind?
U — Understand Your Emotions
Name what you feel without judgment
Psalm 34:18“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted…”
Prompt: What am I truly feeling right now?
L — Lean on Support
You don’t have to carry this alone
Proverbs 11:14“There is safety in wise counsel…”
Prompt: Who can I safely talk to?
Final Reflection
You don’t have to wait until everything falls apart to care for your mental health.
You don’t have to earn rest.
You don’t have to prove your worth through exhaustion.
God desires peace for your whole being—your spirit, your soul, and your body.
And you…
You are allowed to be well.
If your check-in reveals that you need support, this could be your gentle next step.
